Halloween Short Stories with Decodable Text

October 13, 2024 No Comments

It’s Halloween season! And as much as I love Halloween, it does take some creativity to maintain some sort of order in my kinder classroom! It’s like the kids flip a switch the second October hits! My students love sharing about their costumes, pumpkins, and what candy they’ll get.

I never get tired of them asking me if today is Halloween as we do our daily calendar! But…… I do have to wrap up first-quarter assessments and maintain some level of order. Plus, we are just barely blending and reading cvc words, so its very important to me to continue to provide fun, engaging activities that align with Science or Reading. Even when Halloween is right around the corner, I still want to make sure that I am helping grow as readers.

I you can relate to any of this, then check these out! I have something that checks all the boxes for the month of October in my classroom! Halloween Reading Passages and Activities. This resource is a lifesaver, especially during the Halloween chaos. It’s a set of Science of Reading-aligned decodable passages with a fun fall and Halloween twist, so it grabs the kids’ attention right away.

Here’s the best part: these Halloween stories help build those foundational reading skills we’re all focused on in just a short amount of time. They’re differentiated too, which means they’re perfect for students at different reading levels. So while the kids think they’re just reading something spooky or fun, you’re still meeting your goals of helping them grow as readers. The passages are structured in a way that supports phonics, decoding, and comprehension, all while keeping them excited to read.

And because it’s Halloween-themed, you get that seasonal flair without losing the rigor. It feels festive, but it’s also rooted in quality instruction. The activities that go along with the passages are hands-on and engaging, so students are active in their learning, not just passive listeners.

Plus, it helps keep them on task because they’re excited about the content. You won’t be fighting to hold their attention—they’ll be begging to do the next activity!
