Long before the reading wars were upon us, I discovered the magic of decodable texts by accident. I had a student who could not “make progress” with leveled readers. Week after week they were a source of frustration. I decided we had to do something different. This sweet kiddo knew all his letters and their phonemes, so we began blending those sounds and reading cvc words. Eventually, we put more and more cvc words together and added a few irregular words to the mix, and created sentences to read. I was amazed that this student, who had struggled for so long was reading! His frustration was gone and his confidence soared.
